Sarina Jain
The Jane Fonda of India

Masala Bhangra is a workout program designed by Sarina Jain. It is a celebration of the Indian culture combining Indian dance and a strenuous workout.

Although Sarina was born in San Francisco, her parents were born in northern India. Her father, especially, was intent on teaching Sarina about her heritage and helping her embrace her Indian roots. She became an aerobics instructor at a very young age, something her father did not quite comprehend, but supported as he did all things involving Sarina.

Her father was not even fifty years old when he died of cardiac arrest. Since then Sarina has devoted her life to promoting two things. The first is a healthy lifestyle with exercise and good habits. The second is the promotion of her Indian heritage and culture.

The perfect combination of these two concepts is Masala Bhangra. It is the first introduction of Indian dance to the "global fitness scene". It is certified by the American Fitness Boards.

The name itself has an interesting origin. In Hindi, "Masala" means spicy. "Bhangra" is a traditional folk dance from Punjab, in the north of India. Meshed together in Bollywood style the workouts are fun and affective.

Combined the two are a perfect description of this spicy Indian dance. Although it can be adapted for all ages, physical capabilities and abilities make no mistake, this is a work out. It is rigorous and strenuous, burning more than 500 calories, on average, per workout.

Sarina Jain says "This is not a workout you must be in shape for ahead of time. It can easily be adapted to any fitness level. Regardless of what you can do or what your limitations are, we can adapt the workout and you can still have a lot of fun while working out."

With the use of videos (Sarina is launching her 7th!) the workout can be done in the privacy of your home. There are also classes offered locally by Lisa Wheeler-Cooper, a master in the program.

Jain herself will be teaching a master class in Beachwood on Thursday October 6, 2010. It will be held at Let's Dance Cleveland, 23366 Commerce Park Suite 111 from 6:30 to 7:30 followed by an opportunity to meet Sarina Jain from 7:30 - 8:30. The fee for the Master Class is $25 in advance and $30 at the door. For more information about the master class call 330-573-7513.

Masala Bhangra is a unique workout program inspired by love, commitment and a knowledge and understanding of the need for physical fitness. As Jain says "People are more likely to work out when it is fun and even social. You can work out longer and more effectively when you are enjoying what you are doing."
