Concertgoers can enjoy close to 500 concerts throughout the year at the main campus located in University Circle, Cleveland's cultural hub. With over 100 Concert Series events, 250 student recitals, master classes, and community events, The Institute has music for everyone, most presented free to the public.
The Cleveland Institute of Music is a leading international conservatory that is distinguished by an exceptional degree of collaboration between students and teachers. This same stimulating environment extends to the Institute's community education programs, which help people of all ages realize their musical potential.
The mission of The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), since its founding in 1920, has been to provide its students with a professional, world-class education in the art of music. As a top tier conservatory, CIM's student body is international in its composition: 25% from other countries, 50% from other U.S. states, and 25% from Ohio.
More than 3000 talented students have graduated in the Bachelors, Masters, Artist Diploma, Artist Certificate, Professional Studies and Doctoral programs. 80% of The Institute's alumni perform in major national and international orchestras and opera companies and hold prominent teaching positions around the world.
The Institute participates in a Joint Music Program with Case Western Reserve University which allows college students to take advantage of an outstanding liberal arts education. A close relationship with The Cleveland Orchestra is maintained with thirty-two members of The Orchestra serving on the CIM faculty. Thirty CIM alumni currently hold positions with The Orchestra.
Community Involvement takes a premier position through the efforts of the Preparatory and Continuing Education Division. 1300 students, aged 3-18, take lessons throughout the year, while 400 adults continue their studies or start a new instrument. The outstanding faculty represents many years of experience teaching children, young people and adults, offering private lessons for all instruments, voice and music theory.
This Division supports the Sato Center for Suzuki Studies, the musical and personal development of students in the Young Artist Program (teens intent upon a musical career), the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony (Northeast Ohio's finest high school band performers), beginning and intermediate string orchestras, percussion ensemble and chamber music. During the summer, students can take private lessons, attend Camp Klavier, a day camp for young pianists aged 10-17, or participate in the Circle Sampler Camp with other University Circle institutions.
Classes are held at the main building in University Circle and at four suburban branches located in Hudson, Shaker Heights, Orange Village and Fairview Park. For more information, call (216)791-5000, ext. 217.
