Carmel Celestin, MD, is a Staff Physician in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Section of Vascular Medicine.
Dr. Celestin's specialty interests include lower-extremity edema, peripheral arterial disease, upper-extremity disorders, as well as minority and women's healthcare initiatives.
Dr. Celestin told the girls some of her personal story - how she grew up poor in a New Jersey inner city. Her mother stressed education and young Carmel decided at an early age to do whatever it took to become a doctor. And she did!
Dr. Celestin explained many of the health risks that girls face and urged them to make smart choices: choices they won't regret in later life.
When discussing her experiences with patients, Dr. Celestin mentioned:
The bad
- Wished they would not have engaged in some of the habits they did
- Depressed-lack of fulfillment
- Families are affected
