Cleveland Comets
Women's Baseball
by Janet Podojil

The Cleveland Comets Women's Baseball Team, first team of the Greater Cleveland Women's Baseball League (GCWBBL), enters its 3rd year as the only Ohio area women-only baseball venue.

Pitching for the Cleveland Comets

Both the Comets and the GWBBL are a grassroots effort to bring Baseball to women who have been traditionally shut out or pushed into softball after the Little League level of play. Many who have played on men's teams or had given up on their dream of playing altogether now have a place.

Catching for the Cleveland Comets

Most people still give us that bewildered look when we say women play baseball, thinking we are confused. You mean Softball right?

No, really!

Women.

Little ball.

Ninety feet to the bag.

Overhand pitching.

A few actually get in there at 70 mph.

And we turn some mean double plays too!!

Following the legacy of the women's professional league during WWII, The Comets take their name from one of those teams, the Kenosha Comets of Wisconsin. We play in the Great Lakes League against teams from Michigan, Chicago, South Bend, and have recently competed at the Roy Hobbs National Championships in Florida.

The Cleveland Comets

Currently, our oldest player is in her 50's, our average age is in the 30's, but we are open to any woman 18+ who wants to play the dream, or softball players looking for a challenge. A few hard core players come all the way from the Dayton/ Cincinnati area to play and live the dream.

The GCWBBL role is to provide a framework for expansion of teams in the Ohio region. A group of 12 -15 players from an area would make up a new team for more competition. (Hey Steelers fans - Wanna Play Ball?)
