WEWS, Channel 5, was the first licensed television station in the state of Ohio. They launched 60 years ago on December 17, 1947. Since then they have maintained the same channel position, ownership and call letters - the only Cleveland station to do that.
WEWS was also first in other ways. - They were the first in Ohio to Broadcast live from a helicopter
- They were the first in Cleveland to broadcast a major league baseball game the Cleveland Indians in 1948.
- WEWS was the first station to offer a full college credit course taught over the air.
- They were the first in Ohio to broadcast a live, remote news report via "Action Cam."
- They were the first TV station in Cleveland to launch a website, newsnet5.com, in 1998.
- WEWS was the first station to televise a live cooking show.
- WEWS was the first station to receive the distinguished George Foster Peabody Award for public service.
- WEWS was the home to Dorothy Fuldheim, the country's first female news commentator
