Dear Webby
Baby shower for 3rd child

Dear Webby,

I was just invited to a baby shower for a friend's 3rd child. Shouldn't she already have everything she needs from her first 2 kids?

Tired of Showers

Dear Tired,

Webby would think yes, she should have saved some things from the first two.

That is unless she was not planning a third child, unless she shared her things with others, unless this time it is a child of different sex and frilly dresses would be inappropriate. Or if there is a large gap between children's ages.

Hopefully she has the big items like her crib and car seat.

Every baby needs new diapers, bibs and little sleep outfits. Sometimes the orange juice just doesn't wash out. There are some things new mothers never have enough of.

Could she be feeling down or overwhelmed and her friends are having this to cheer her, or as just a chance to get together? She's probably not throwing the shower herself. That would be an entirely different topic. Maybe the person hosting the shower just wants to show support.

Webby senses a bit of resentment in your question. Do you feel she is taking advantage and asking you to finance her new family member? You could always send your regrets and not participate if you chose.

If finances are tight, you could show your support and best wishes with a less expensive gift and a nice note.
