Alpal gets ready for
the Holidays

Is It? Can it be? YES! The Holidays.

Everyone loves the holidays. It's the best time of the year. Thanksgiving break, Christmas vacation, shopping, turkeys, Santa... what's not to like?

But have you ever wondered how it all started or what some things like the candy cane or the jingle bell stand for? Well I'm here to tell you a little background on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

So let's start with Thanksgiving. Of course, we all know about Christopher Columbus discovering America and then the Pilgrims coming over and feasting with the Indians. Thanksgiving is a lot about the harvest and thanking the different gods of different cultures.

Thanksgiving
The Romans celebrated a festival called Cerelea where they (of course) celebrated and thanked the gods. In Greece on this day they celebrated the goddess of grains named Demetes. The harvest festival was called Themosphoria.

The Chinese celebrate Chung Chu'i to give thanks for the crops. The Hebrews celebrated Sukkoth, which is the second most important holiday in the Jewish religion. In Egypt they had a festival in honor of their god Min.

And of course Americans celebrate Thanksgiving because of the Pilgrims and the Indians.

Thanksgiving

So Thanksgiving is really what its name says, "thanks for giving."
